Procedure Steps

1. Inspects conditions of the hands & finger nails.

2. Selects proper size and type of sterile gloves and surgical gown.

3. Performs hand hygiene.

4. Lifts the folded gown directly upward from the sterile package.

5. Grasps gown at the neckline, allows it to fall open while stepping back from the table.

6. Does not allow gown to touch any non-sterile surface.

7. Slides both arms into the sleeves without extending hands through the cuffs.

8. Keeps the sleeves of the gown above waist level.

9. Allows the circulatory nurse to tie neck and back ties by touching only inside of gown.

10. Opens the sterile glove wrapper, keeping fingers inside the sleeve of the gown.

11. Grasps cuff of the glove for the dominant hand, keeps hands inside gown sleeves.

12. Lays glove on forearm of the dominant hand, with the palm of the glove facing down, glove fingers points toward elbow, and glove thumb positions on thumb side of dominant hand.

13. Grasps the inside glove cuff with dominant hand through the gown, being careful to keep fingers inside the gown.

14. With non-dominant hand encased in the gown sleeve, pulls the dominant-hand glove cuff over the cuff of the gown.

15. Grasps sleeve of gown (nondominant hand) and the cuff of the dominant-hand glove, pulls the glove onto the dominant hand.

 

16. Places second glove on the forearm of non- dominant hand with the palm of the glove down, fingers pointed toward the elbow and glove thumb on thumb-side of non-dominant hand.

17. Grasps the inside glove cuff with non-dominant hand through the gown, being careful to keep fingers inside the gown.

18. With dominant hand, pulls the glove cuff over the cuff of the gown.

19. Grasps the sleeve of the gown and the cuff of the glove and pulls the glove onto the non-dominant hand.

 

20. Adjusts the fingers in both gloves.

Removing Gown and Gloves:

21. Allows the circulatory nurse to release the ties of the gown from shoulders and back ties from behind.

22. Grasps the shoulders of the gown, pulled it downward from the shoulder and off the arms, and turned the sleeves inside out.

23. Folds the contaminated surface of the gown on the inside and rolls it away from the body.

24. Discards the rolled gown in the appropriate receptacle.

25. Grasps the under cuff of the left glove with the gloved fingers on the right and pulls it off inside out.

26. Slips the ungloved fingers of the left hand inside the right glove and slips it off inside out.

27. Discards the gloves in the appropriate receptacle.

28. Performs hand hygiene.
